Okay, this is going to be long and full of pictures. Get ready. 🙂
Thursday: Travel + Aloha, Hawaii!
My day started off full of anxiety, of course. I left Saige’s house in Milwaukee around 5 a.m. for the airport, parked and got ready for a 10-ish hour day of flying.
The little flight from Milwaukee to Chicago was terrifying – it was too short of a flight to take my anxiety medication and it was a TINY plane, so very bumpy. Luckily my long flight from Chicago to Honolulu was very comfortable and smooth. Plus, I was so excited, so that helped!
With the 5-hour time change, I arrived on Oahu around 1:30 p.m. to my wonderful best friend.
We quickly got lunch, dropped my stuff off at her place and then went to get our nails done. Part of that day is foggy, so I don’t remember all the details, but I met her boyfriend (Cody) and two roommates (Ronnie and Dave). Michelle, Dave and I ended up getting dinner at a Korean BBQ place and then went to bed.
Friday: Beach day!
Honestly, I loved the entire trip, but this was probably my favorite day. I spent the entire day with Michelle and it was so relaxing! We went up to Turtle Bay first and laid out on the beach …
We got lunch at a shrimp truck and then roamed around some more beaches.
Then we went to Hale’iwa, went through some shops, got some shaved ice (OMG SO GOOD) …
And roamed around some more on the beach.
Then we went to the Dole Plantation and got some Dole Whip (HOLY CRAP – SO GOOD)
We went back to Michelle’s house and cuddled the pups before going out in Honolulu for the night.
Meet Duffy – the only man a girl needs (+ Bruce – the other pup at the house. OMG I loved those dogs)
Michelle and I left to go get appetizers / Lava Flow drinks before meeting up with Cody and Dave and two of Michelle’s friends at a couple of bars.
Saturday: Mermaid Caves
Saturday was a bit rainy (though still super warm) so Michelle and I went to look for the Mermaid Caves.
And we found them! But I was too chicken to go inside
(what else is new).
After the caves, we met Cody at the house and took off for sushi in Honolulu, followed by car shopping (and meeting another dog!!!!)
The pit bull’s name was Snooze … I mean, I can’t.
After that, Cody took us through the base he works on and then back home we went. Michelle and I snuck out for some froyo and TJ Maxx (OBVIOUSLY) and then back to the house to watch Mulan 2 which I had NO idea existed.
And I cried watching it, obviously. Please excuse the f-word.
In fact, I was introduced to all kinds of interesting things on Saturday night. Including cockroaches and weird music videos.
Sunday: Costco, Hanuma Bay & Hiking
Michelle and I started out the day going to Costco with Cody and Dave – probably the most fun I’ve ever had at Costco. 😉 Then, Michelle and I decided to be beach babes again (duh) and went to lay on another beach, Hanuma Bay (P.S. thank God for the iPhone putting locations on pictures you take, otherwise I’d forget the names of all of these places).
After a sufficient amount of sunshine and swimming (aka Michelle swimming and me wading where I could still touch), we headed out to go for a hike – I think it was called the Lighthouse Hike? Maybe? I don’t remember, but basically it was completely paved so it wasn’t too scary.
Do you spy the awesome sunburn lines?
Isn’t my best friend beautiful? And brave – I was too chicken to go out to the ledge. 🙂
Once we got home, we took showers (seriously, how does sand get EVERYWHERE), hung out with the pups and headed out for dinner in Honolulu.
We had a long wait, so we took it as an opportunity to take a bunch of selfies and chat about life. Without getting too sappy, let’s just say I miss my best friend. She always pushes me to do things that scare me!
Monday: Beaches + Pups
Imagine this – WE WENT TO THE BEACH AGAIN!
I think this one was called Kailua … or Lanikai. My phone says both. Basically it was a beach in Hawaii with sand and the ocean. 🙂
We went to lunch, but I did NOT feel well at all. Probably way too much sun (I got super sunburned this day) and too little water. So we went back to Michelle’s for awhile before heading to the Kate Spade outlet (which I talked about in my video yesterday!)
After that, Michelle, Cody, Dave, Duffy, Bruce and I (I promise we hung out with Ronnie, too – he was just always busy during the day!) went back to base to look for the dog beach. We ended up driving all over and taking the dogs out. I was lucky enough to see the USS Utah Memorial as well.
Duffy was afraid of the water, so Michelle had to go in with him. 🙂
I never realize how much taller she is than me until pictures like this. #forevertheshortfriend
We ended up eating on base (salad, pina colada and a s’mores dessert for me, yesssss please) where we could see the planes taking off / landing and then going back and hanging out at Michelle’s with more pina coladas.
Tuesday: Pearl Harbor + Me Crying By Myself 😉
Tuesday started out SUPER early (well, 6:30 a.m.) to get over to Pearl Harbor in time to get free tickets. This was one of the most beautiful and haunting places I’ve ever been.
After that, Michelle and I went up to the Disney Resort to go back on the beach and get some shaved ice. 🙂
And we ended the night with a luau!
So, so, so much fun, but I was so, so, so sad. The entire day I felt this giant pit in my stomach because I knew I had to leave the next day.
Wednesday/Thursday: Flight back home
I slept in a tiny bit, went and got malasadas with Michelle and then cuddled the pups for awhile, sobbing here and there in between. 😉
And big ol’ Bruce – he was too tired to wake up for me. 🙂
I spent the morning chatting with Michelle for my last remaining hours on the island. She dropped me off at the airport around 1:30 and I basically bawled my way through the entire process.
Thankfully the flight wasn’t too bad. While in Hawaii, Dave (who is a pilot) basically told/showed me everything about flying, so I felt a lot better about the flight (minus the part that meant I was leaving). Luckily I pulled myself together by the time I got on the plane, and watched some shows while we flew home.
The long flight wasn’t too bad, but again the tiny plane was super bumpy. But I survived!
Once I landed in Milwaukee, I drove the two hours back to Green Bay and arrived at 8:30 a.m. central time on Thursday (so … 3:30 a.m. Hawaii time) and fell asleep for five hours. The rest of the weekend I talked about on Monday, but it’s been a struggle re-adjusting and I miss everything about Hawaii – especially Michelle.
So, that’s the condensed version of my trip! I felt so at peace the whole time I was there and I loved it so much.
Have you ever been to Hawaii? What do you think of it?
