Weekend Recap: A Very Potter Birthday

Birthdays and weekends are the best, aren’t they?!

So we’ll start with Thursday, only because I feel like that’s when my “weekend” began last week. On Thursday my company laid off about 130 people in corporate. I had been hearing whisperings of it for awhile, but we weren’t sure what was happening. Thankfully I was not one of those cut at this time, but it’s definitely not something I want to go through again. One really great thing about Thursday though is that I got to work downtown AND I got approved to work from home on Fridays. Three-day commutes are NOTHING in comparison to five!

Friday I was able to sleep in a bit and then plopped myself on the couch to work in the morning. I worked until about 12:30 before I moved myself over to Starbucks. As much as I want to work-from-home entirely someday, I still need some human interaction so SB it was! My favorite person met me over there around 3.

Any guesses what the guy in the background of that photo is doing??

We worked a little past 5 and then headed out for an early date night. Ben and I are both trying to save money, but he mentioned chips and salsa and I’m easily swayed from saving. 😉

Flo Chicago

Apologies for the poor lighting + Snapchat (JustJessie23 #shamelessplug) pics, but the lighting was badddddd.

We went to a place called Flo in West Town. It’s technically a New Mexican restaurant. My chips/salsa and margarita were spectacular and Ben loved his food. I didn’t love my main dish, but I had gorged myself with so many chips that I wasn’t into a heavy meal. Definitely would go back!

We stopped at a little wine bar on our way home for a glass of wine … It was a fun place, but our server was kinda cranky. I did not like my wine – apparently I was in a cranky mood toward food/drink on Friday!

Wine Date Night

Saturday morning I got up with Ben and headed to the Starbucks by his work while he trained his clients. I spent the entire morning basically watching Gary V motivational videos, trying to figure out how to change WordPress themes (any advice on this? Do I need to back up all the things first?) and spying on dogs.

Ben met me for another hour of work before we could go back to workout. I, of course, have no photos of our workout. WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN?

After our workout, we both went back to our own apartments to get ready for a quick trip to Milwaukee for Saige’s birthday! She had THE BEST Harry Potter cake.

The night was so much fun. There were about 15 of us there and we had a fun game night. Ben and I ended up driving back to Chicago late because we had plans on Sunday plus were boring/old and were falling asleep by 11!

Sunday we slept in a bit since we didn’t get in bed until 2 a.m. the night before, then I got ready for brunch with Marette!

Only brunch with @jessiedeschane could pull me back out of hibernation!👯👯❤

We went to this awesome place called Tuco & Blondie, which I loved! Apparently I was in a Mexican food mood this weekend.

Always have such a great time catching up with her!

After brunch, Ben, his sister and I all headed out to the suburbs with dinner/hanging out with his family, which is always a nice time. We got back to the city around 10 and bummed around on the couch for the rest of the night before calling it quits.

P.S if you read my post on Friday, the lie was #1. Tricked you! I’m not actually from Green Bay, though I was living there for 2.5 years before I moved this January. 🙂

How was your weekend?
Are you a brunch person?

Weekend Recap: Homecoming 2016

And the crazy weekend is over – woooohoooo!

Saturday my day started out pretty early with a trip to the gym. Had to get it in!

After an upper body + HIIT workout, it was off to the Homecoming tailgate!

Homecoming 2016

It was actually a pretty slow tailgate for us this year, but we still had a good chunk of people stop by!

After the tailgate, we went back to the house (my office is in a house) and unloaded the truck/ate/sat down for a couple of minutes. Then the rest of the afternoon was spent running around campus, checking in on smaller reunions and getting our “After Party” tent all set up.

The After Party went all night and I was whooped. I got home around 9 p.m. and went straight to bed.

Sunday morning I slept in a little and then started in on my social media freelance … and was interrupted by a pug. 🙂

I got done with my social around 3 and then cleaned the apartment as best I could, did laundry, went to the gym, went grocery shopping, meal prepped … and then died. Just kidding – but it was a pretty crazy “weekend” if you can even call it that.

This morning I got up at 5 (somehow) and got in a shoulders + HIIT workout.

And now it’s back to work!

Here’s to a productive week – last week before my travel month starts up. Madison (for fun) this weekend to visit my wonderful friend Lindsay and hopefully a TON more trips to Chicago next month. I’m telling you … I just need to be there permanently. 😉

How was your weekend?
What are you doing for Halloween weekend?

Let’s have coffee

I love these types of posts. Whether it’s coffee, tea, diet code red mountain dew (my teeth are going to rot off, I swear) … I love getting coffee with a friend and catching up. Since I don’t have many in-person coffee dates planned, let’s have one together!

Coffee Date

If we were having coffee …

I’d tell you about the awesome, life-changing and uplifting trip I had to Chicago last week. Do any of you ever just “click” with someone, something, some place? That’s how I felt with Chicago. I’ve always liked it there, but this last time just solidified things for me. Even a few of you who watched my video noticed how happy I was, which is crazy to me that you can see that!

I’d ask you a million and one questions, because that’s what I do. I love hearing about things happening in my friends lives, whether it’s how passionate they are about their work, a new person joining their family, a funny date story … I love it. So how about you tell me something about you in the comments? I’d love to hear it. 🙂

I’d probably spill some of my drink on myself, let’s be real.

I’d tell you about a huge weight being lifted off my shoulders. After over a year of being denied by loan refinancing companies, one finally refinanced my loan based on my credit score instead of solely based on my very low salary. So, my payments were supposed to go up to $867 in January (per month) … and the loan refinancing company cut that in half. It’s a HUGE weight off my shoulders and a little more manageable. Seriously, check out SoFi if you’re struggling with student loans (or any type of personal debt).

You’d probably ask me about my dating life because, well … that’s what people ask single people. It’s okay, though. I’m used to it. I’d tell you I’m not actively seeking anyone, not online dating, none of that. I’d tell you that I’ve given up on the dating scene where I live a long time ago because I have no intention of staying in the area forever, which obviously hinders my dating life. Now, if you prod a little bit more, I’d probably tell you about someone that currently has my “attention”, so to speak, but I’m nervous about it. Girl has been burned quite a few times, so I am apprehensive. But you would be able to see past the nervousness and see that I’m more excited than nervous. We’ll see what happens. 🙂 (<— I’m THE BEST at being vague enough that ya’ll will hate me)

I’d ask you your opinion on what to wear for a wedding next month because girl is BAD at making decisions.

I’d ask you about your favorite hair stylist … hair is a big deal for me and I haven’t had mine done in almost a year. Whoops …

I’d tell you about how crazy my November is going to be for work – just the full-time job. I have five events next month, but four of them require overnight travel. Nov. 3: Madison, Nov. 10: Minneapolis (overnight), Nov. 15-18: Chicago (multiple overnights). I’d tell you that I’m excited about it, because getting out of the office and being at my events is the best feeling. Although, you would probably be able to tell that I’m hopeful for new opportunities soon.

I’d tell you that we need to have coffee more often because I miss being with like-minded, fun, energetic, driven people. So, I’d basically beg you to be my friend all the time. 😉

I asked you above, but if we were getting coffee, what would you want to talk about? What would you ask me? What kind of drink would you get?

Four Ways To Better Your Mood

Hey friends! As you might have noticed in my last couple of blog posts (particularly these two), I was in a tiny bit of a funk. Now, I’ve been the person that’s been in a funk for years. I still struggle with anxiety on the regular, but I’ve gotten much better at controlling the way that I think which is the first step in a more positive mindset.

Four Ways To Better Your Mood

List off five things you’re grateful for
I think I’ve mentioned this one before, but I do it every morning. Whether you’re talking to yourself, God, the Universe – whatever you believe in – just name off a few things/feelings. I will be grateful for everything from beautiful weather to a conversation with a friend to a FaceTime with a crush to just being alive and healthy. I promise you, it’ll help. And soon you’ll be more and more grateful for things around you because you’re looking for positivity in your life. Who knows, maybe some days you’ll be able to list off way more than 5!

Smile and look at the people around you
This may seem simple, but I noticed that when I’m in a mood, sometimes I don’t even look at people. I’ve been walking on the trail before and noticed that I purposely looked away from people near me because I didn’t want to make eye contact. How cranky! So on days I’m feeling particularly crabby (and just in general), I try to make it a point to look at people and SMILE at them. I know, rough life. But not only will it make them feel better, but it’ll make you feel better. The more you smile, the better you’ll feel. Plus, maybe you’ll make someone else’s day in the process.

Talk to someone that cares about you
Now, we all have that friend that loves to be the devil’s advocate – and we LOVE that friend – but not today. Talk to the friend that is overly excited about life. The positive friend. The friend that’ll listen to you, but give you upbeat and positive advice instead of agreeing with you when you’re in a poor mood. Yesterday I had a conversation with two people that make me happy and I just couldn’t be in a bad mood anymore.

Fake it ’til you make it
This is and probably always will be one of my most favorite quotes of all time. This has helped me with self confidence issues, imposter issues (when I feel like I’m not “qualified” or “good enough” for something) and just mood problems in general. I annoy myself sometimes, but if I’m in a bad mood I will FORCE myself to think positively. I’ll smile at everyone, laugh at my boss’ dumb jokes, make myself go and talk to a coworker even though I have a lot of work to do, send flirty texts even though I’m chicken … etc. Trust me, even after a couple minutes of pretending you’re happy, I bet you’ll feel a little better.

Four Things To Put You In a Better Mood

Do you have any tips or tricks?

Dressember 2016

Have any of you heard of Dressember? It’s something I’m just starting to learn about, but I thought I’d share it with all of you. (All pictures and videos are from their website, which I link multiple times throughout the post.)

I’ll be honest, when I first saw this on my friend Bethany’s Facebook wall I was like, “OH COOL! I can wear dresses for a month, NO PROBLEM.” But then I read a little bit more into the initiative and realized how much more I wanted to be involved. I am an extremely feminine woman (something that I really like about myself) and I think that every woman should be allowed to dress, act, and do what she wants to do. “Dressember uses fashion to advocate for women who’ve been exploited for their femininity.”

Dressember is a concept that founder Blythe Hill put together, first as a challenge to herself and now it has grown into something WAY bigger than that. Since 2009, Dressember has continued to raise awareness for human trafficking. In 2013, the initiative partnered with International Justice Mission and has been fundraising money ever since to put a stop to the slavery that more than 30 million people are involved in.

For the full background, watch this video:

“Dressember is a collaborative movement leveraging fashion and creativity to restore dignity to all women.”

“The heart of Dressember is freedom – that every woman has the right to live a vibrant and autonomous life.”

Here’s my site. If anyone is interested in joining a blogging team, let me know and I’ll put one together!
