Chicago Restaurant Review: Rhyme or Reason

Since moving to Chicago, I’ve come to find out that my stomach is probably going to be a bit bigger while my wallet gets a bit smaller. The food here is INSANE.

I’m going to start this series off with a brunch spot I went to a few weeks ago. They have more than just lunch (cool bar + music + patio + nightlife) so I can only speak to brunch but BOYOHBOY, can I speak to it. So here’s to Rhyme or Reason!

Straight from their website:

“Rhyme or Reason is a New American Restaurant, Bar & Music Venue located at the corner of Division and Damen in Wicker Park. We strive to revamp a decade of elegance and Motown classics. On one end, people were throwing elaborate dinner parties. On the other— soulful music pioneers that were turning the world upside down. Without ‘rhyme or reason’ we meshed together these two separate ideas together to create a venue where the moments we know and love today can live on. Whether you come for our Chicken & Doughnuts during weekend brunch or our signature RoR Burger on a Thursday night, it’s always a good time at Rhyme or Reason!”

Rhyme or Reason Review
I started my meal off with a Bloody Mary.

Rhyme or Reason Review
“Mcclure’s bloody mix, hanger one vodka, garnished with a green olive, grilled shrimp, maple glazed bacon, our grilled cheesy cheese, shaved pickled cucumber.”

Rating: 8/10

I shared this with Ben since we’re both not drinking much alcohol now, but I couldn’t pass up a bloody. I consider myself a bit of a BM-snob. Growing up in Wisconsin + living in Milwaukee (the Bloody Mary Capital, IMHO) does that to you.

I chose my meal the first time I found Rhyme or Reason on Instagram … the Chicken & Doughnuts.

Weekend Recap: Sister Visits Chicago!“House made doughnuts, fried chicken, maple bourbon reduction.”

Oh. My. Doughnut. Gosh.

Rating: 150M/10 (<— Not a typo)

I’ve definitely fallen into the chicken & waffles Instagram-worthy food porn, so obviously I had to jump at this. I actually wasn’t expecting it to be SO incredible.

The doughnuts were thick, warm and fluffy. Since they aren’t a “doughnut” shop, I wasn’t expecting them to be so good. I’d go back just for those.

Rhyme or Reason ReviewI did give Ben a few pieces, but I blasted through this dish with no problems and immediately wanted more – not because I was still hungry (it was actually quite filling!), but because it was so damn good.

One more because I like REALLY LOVED the fried chicken & donuts @rhymeorreason_chi 😍

I can’t wait to go back, but I’m torn! Do I go back for brunch to get this again or go back later to try something else? Both? Okay, both it it is.

If you live in Chicago or are ever in the area, definitely check out Rhyme or Reason!

Weekend Recap: Games & Brunch

Happy Monday! I can say that because this has definitely shaped up to be a pretty amazing Monday. 🙂 Even so, let’s take a quick look back at the weekend.

Friday I worked from home (and wrote a sneaky little blog post) for the day. I walked to the gym to workout with Ben over lunch, but my stomach was killing me so we just ended up walking home. Hey, at least I got in a walk?

The rest of the afternoon I spent working and logged off around 5. I got ready, headed over to Ben’s and we took off for a night in the city with one of our favorite couples, Frank and Draco. We had some drinks and sushi at Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge before heading to FTW – an arcade bar downtown. I had SO much fun! And Ben loved his super girly drink. 😉

After a few hours of games, Ben and I headed home and were all tucked in before midnight. YES.

Saturday I actually slept in until 11 – what?! Ben had left around 7:30 to train his clients, but I just kept on sleepin’.

I met up with Ben at the gym around 1:30 for our own workout. I was not in the right mindset, but I still got through.

Once we got done, we headed to Big & Little’s to try out some tacos. I didn’t realize how popular the place was! It was pretty good, but if I’m honest … I’ve had better tacos in the city.

Once we were all stuffed, we headed back to Ben’s and pretty much chilled all night, watching a Netflix show and then some Harry Potter. Amazing Saturday!

Sunday we woke up pretty early (well, for us on a weekend at least) and after taking our time getting ready, we headed over to Whisk for brunch. I’ve been to Whisk before and I love it!

We walked there since it was so beautiful out, and had a small wait so we stood outside.

I got the Buffalo Chicken Hash (which is what I got last time) and it was amazing again! Highly recommend.

Ben got the Steak Hash and loved it, too! P.S. I just think he’s the most handsome date ever … 🙂

I was feeling a bit anxious all day, so after brunch we walked home, grabbing a few cake balls from West Town Bakery (no pics, but the french toast one was SO GOOD) on our way. Once home, Ben changed and we headed out to the dog beach again. We both have such crazy dog fever it’s not even funny. Ben was so sweet trying to keep me occupied all day so my mind wouldn’t get the best of me.

After the beach, we went to a park over by our apartments before I headed home to shower/eat quickly. Unfortunately the tortellini I ate made me extremely sick, so Ben and I watched a movie on the couch the rest of the night. Feeling much better this morning, though!

How was your weekend?

Linking up with Katie!
