Since moving to Chicago, I’ve come to find out that my stomach is probably going to be a bit bigger while my wallet gets a bit smaller. The food here is INSANE.
I’m going to start this series off with a brunch spot I went to a few weeks ago. They have more than just lunch (cool bar + music + patio + nightlife) so I can only speak to brunch but BOYOHBOY, can I speak to it. So here’s to Rhyme or Reason!
Straight from their website:
“Rhyme or Reason is a New American Restaurant, Bar & Music Venue located at the corner of Division and Damen in Wicker Park. We strive to revamp a decade of elegance and Motown classics. On one end, people were throwing elaborate dinner parties. On the other— soulful music pioneers that were turning the world upside down. Without ‘rhyme or reason’ we meshed together these two separate ideas together to create a venue where the moments we know and love today can live on. Whether you come for our Chicken & Doughnuts during weekend brunch or our signature RoR Burger on a Thursday night, it’s always a good time at Rhyme or Reason!”
I started my meal off with a Bloody Mary.
“Mcclure’s bloody mix, hanger one vodka, garnished with a green olive, grilled shrimp, maple glazed bacon, our grilled cheesy cheese, shaved pickled cucumber.”
I shared this with Ben since we’re both not drinking much alcohol now, but I couldn’t pass up a bloody. I consider myself a bit of a BM-snob. Growing up in Wisconsin + living in Milwaukee (the Bloody Mary Capital, IMHO) does that to you.
I chose my meal the first time I found Rhyme or Reason on Instagram … the Chicken & Doughnuts.
“House made doughnuts, fried chicken, maple bourbon reduction.”
Oh. My. Doughnut. Gosh.
Rating: 150M/10 (<— Not a typo)
I’ve definitely fallen into the chicken & waffles Instagram-worthy food porn, so obviously I had to jump at this. I actually wasn’t expecting it to be SO incredible.
The doughnuts were thick, warm and fluffy. Since they aren’t a “doughnut” shop, I wasn’t expecting them to be so good. I’d go back just for those.
I did give Ben a few pieces, but I blasted through this dish with no problems and immediately wanted more – not because I was still hungry (it was actually quite filling!), but because it was so damn good.
I can’t wait to go back, but I’m torn! Do I go back for brunch to get this again or go back later to try something else? Both? Okay, both it it is.
If you live in Chicago or are ever in the area, definitely check out Rhyme or Reason!
